ATP Bioscanning

How clean is clean?

ATP bioluminescence (or Bioscanning) is a well established rapid monitoring method that gives instant results and is used to measure cleanliness and hygiene. Bioscanning can detect the presence of bacteria and other organisms on any surface. The results reveal whether your cleaning methods are really working.

Bioscanning in a healthcare setting

BioscanningATP monitoring is now being introduced throughout the Scottish NHS. It has been included in the revised edition of the NHS Cleaning Manual, which now recognises the importance of ATP bioluminescence and how it can assist the daily monitoring of cleaning practice and ensure higher standards are reached.  NHS Domestic and Hotel Services also use ATP monitoring systems as a training tool and to check the cleanliness of patient areas within hospitals. The handheld, lightweight instruments can provide a numerical result in seconds to show how clean or dirty a surface is. This enables the NHS to monitor the cleaning effectiveness of both the hospital environment and of the many types of patient equipment in use.

Bioscanning in food preparation environments

RSA Hygiene now brings you the opportunity to monitor hygiene standards in your food business and receive immediate results.

ATP monitoring is even more effective in food production environments as a tool to help bring food-safety problems to light. ATP bioluminescence testing, which identifies potential contaminants by detecting light emitted from living organisms, has been used by many food processors for several years.

Bioscanning equipmentFood poisoning is caused by harmful bacteria that grow in colonies, invisible to the naked eye. But if you can’t see them, how do you know where they are? They could be lurking on your chopping board or wooden spoon, just waiting to spoil your next dish.

Everyone recognises that cleaning is important in a catering business, but it is difficult to be sure that your equipment and surfaces are truly hygienic. The use of cloths, scourers and tea-towels can all make surfaces look visibly clean, but bacteria often remain - presenting a major risk of cross contamination. To be certain your food environment is clean and safe, you need to be able to 'see' bacteria... And now you can - with Bioscanning.

Cleaning is a ‘critical control point’ in all food businesses. Hazard analysis legislation requires such critical points to be identified, controls implemented and monitoring procedures be put in place. With Bioscanning, the requirement to monitor cleaning effectiveness can be met easily and accurately. It gives you total confidence in the hygiene of your operations, and enables you to prove it to others.

Bioscanning can also make a valid contribution to a ‘Due diligence’ defence should it ever be required.

RSA and Bioscanning

In the last 10 months we have taken over 4500 BIOSCANNING samples to help assess standards of cleanliness in restaurants, kitchens and food manufacturing high care areas, clients includes Noodle Bar, Restaurant Associates (part of the Compass Group) and NHS trusts.

Within a year of commencing the hygiene monitoring service most of our clients drastically raise their baseline results and are able to verify that their cleaning practices and cross contamination controls are effective to enforcement officers and auditors.
